Denmark-born artist Peter Callesen is a master at the intricate and detailed. His artwork is unlike anything you’ve ever seen and is made with a single sheet of paper. Through a meticulous process of cutting and folding, Callesen creates eye-popping and dramatic scenes. These paper cut sculptures magically transform a flat piece of paper into figures that expand into the space around them.
Callesen says his biggest challenge and thrill is taking something flat, and 2D and making it come to life. It is always just one single sheet of paper to make each sculpture.
One of his paper sculptures costs up to 3,000 euros, or a little over $4,000 USD.
He uses a variety of odd tools in order to get every cut and fold as precise as possible. A scalpel for cutting, a dentist tool for folding, and a blunt piece of wood for shaping.
Wondering how flimsy paper sculptures hold their shape? He paints a very tiny bit of glue on them in order to keep them upright.
Callesen doesn’t just work with small scale paper sculptures. He also does life-size models, another mind-blowing expression of artistry featured in the video below. You’ll also be able to see the making of one of these paper sculptures. Incredible!
